Can Chiropractic Care Help Headaches?

A 2001 Duke University study compared chiropractic care with the common headache medication amitriptyline.

The study showed that both were similarly effective in relieving tension headaches. Amitriptyline caused adverse side effects in 82% of the people who took it.

Common side effects of Amitriptyline are:

  • Weight gain – Increased hunger
  • Dizziness
  • Dry Mouth
  • Drowsiness
  • Issues with taste
  • Blurred vision
  • Constipation

Chiropractic care for treating headaches had no adverse side effects.

The most profound results were seen after care was discontinued. Patients who took amitriptyline reverted back to the headache frequency and intensity they experienced before drug therapy. Patients who received chiropractic care experienced lasting improvement in both frequency and intensity of headaches.

Many people have the misconception that Chiropractic care is only for backaches, but nothing is further from the truth.

How Chiropractic can help your headache…

Did you know that in the United States millions of work days are missed each year thanks to “the headache”? Many of these headaches are caused by tension. Needless to say, many people turn to medication for relief, either over the counter or prescription medicine. Yes, these remedies will most likely bring relief from the pain, but they don’t address the issue that is at the root of the problem.

ChiropracticAdjustment-MyersChiropracticAnother little know fact is that the pain you experience from a headache doesn’t come from your brain, which doesn’t feel pain. A Chiropractor will take a deeper look to discover the source of your headache, which could be:

  1. The spinal bones in your neck aren’t supporting your head correctly, which can affect your muscles, your nerves, and even the blood supply to your brain.
  2. Spinal joints may be out of alignment, leading to irritated nerves.

Your Chiropractor will

  • Look at your spine to see if there are areas that don’t move properly by
    • checking your spinal curves
    • checking your posture
    • checking how well you turn and bend
  • Determine if your headaches may be a result of whiplash
  • Possibly take x-rays to determine the cause of the stress to your spine

Once there is a diagnosis, your chiropractor will work up a course of treatment which will most likely include gentle massage or spinal manipulations to correct your spine.

Chiropractic care is a thorough and drug-free way to treat your headaches…Drug therapies may reduce symptoms, chiropractic care addresses the cause of condition.
